Methodology

How we keep our numbers current

Retirement rules and benefit amounts change. Our calculators and guides read from a single versioned constants file for the tax year, with a visible verification date — currently 2026-07-12 for 2026.

Where figures come from

  • CRA — federal brackets, BPA, RRSP/TFSA limits, RRIF factors, tax credits.
  • Service Canada — CPP maximum and average new benefits, OAS/GIS quarterly payment amounts, recovery-tax thresholds.
  • Source URLs are stored next to each constant in lib/retirement-data/2026.ts.

Refresh cadence

  • Annual (January) — tax brackets, RRSP/TFSA limits, YMPE/YAMPE, CPP max, federal credits.
  • Quarterly — OAS and GIS maximums (Jan / Apr / Jul / Oct CPI adjustments).
  • After each refresh we update the verified date, re-run tests, and refresh amount-bearing guides.

Modelling assumptions

Tools are educational estimates, not advice. Known simplifications (single-filer focus, simplified GIS tables, QC provincial tax incomplete, capital-gains ACB defaults) are documented on the disclaimer and in engine // ASSUMPTION comments.

Editorial process

Guides are reviewed by The Retirement Beast editorial team. Figures are checked against CRA and Service Canada before the verified stamp is updated. We do not attribute content to a named individual — the Organization stands behind the numbers.
